The new research presented by the scientists at the Congress of Neurological Surgeons reveals that deep brain stimulation treatment can help suppress the growth of Parkinson’s disease. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has significant positive effects on the people who have utilized it. Dr. Peter Konrad, a professor of Neurological Surgery and biomedical engineering at Vanderbilt University said, “Deep Brain Stimulation is the first ever therapy that has shown positive effects on Parkinson’s disease. It overpowers the cardinal activity of Parkinson’s disease.”
The outcomes of the results were derived on two research findings. Firstly, DBS can potentially be applied former than the current indications. It is most effective in patients with the mid or last stage of the disease where other normal medications fail to respond. Secondly, DBS can slow down the development of tremor – one of the trademark feature of Parkinson’s disease. The study involved 28 people affected by this disease having age between 50 to 75 years. All these patients were taking suppository to treat the disease. The group was divided into two groups. The first group consists of people who took normal medication while the second group included people who received medication along with DBS.
After a regular interval of time, both the groups were asked to stop the medication. Doctors measured the starting symptoms of the disease. It was measured with the help of the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale. After two years, when doctors gathered the results it showed that those patients receiving medication alone had worse scores concerning the severity of tremor. While those who took DBS along with the medication showed improvement in the disease. Moreover, the group that received only medication were 2.6 times at greater risk of severity than the other group of people. Tremor formation in Parkinson’s disease usually starts with one limb and spreads to the other body parts gradually. Most surprising results were when DBS was inactivated for few weeks and still, the benefit of DBS remained constant.
